Sizing a console for a hallway

Depth matters more than width in a hallway. A console 30–35cm deep will sit against the wall without narrowing the walkway; anything deeper starts to feel like an obstruction in a corridor under 1.2m wide. Leave at least 90cm of clear passage past the table. For width, a console looks best when it is shorter than the wall it sits on — aim for roughly two thirds of the available run, leaving space at each end rather than filling it.

Styles in this range

Farmhouse and reclaimed pine consoles have visible grain and a chunkier profile, and suit period properties and country interiors. Painted and oak-topped designs are the most versatile — they sit comfortably in most hallways without committing the space to a style. Industrial consoles pair a wood-effect top with a black metal frame; the open frame makes them read lighter, which helps in a narrow hallway. Console tables are not only for hallways — the same proportions work well behind a sofa, under a window, or as a compact dressing table in a bedroom.

Assembly and delivery

Console tables are delivered flat-packed with instructions and fixings included. Most assemble in 30–45 minutes and can be completed by one person. Measure your doorway and any turns on the route in before ordering — a hallway that suits a console is often the same hallway that makes delivery awkward.
