Safety standards for children's beds

All bunk beds and mid-sleepers stocked at onlineand.direct conform to BS EN 747, which covers structural integrity, guardrail height, ladder design, and maximum load for beds used by children. We recommend that children under 6 do not use the upper bunk, regardless of the frame specification — this is standard guidance from the British Standards Institution. Weight limits are listed on each product page. For kids mattresses, we recommend a firm or medium-firm mattress to support growing spines — softer mattresses can create alignment issues over time. Choosing the right kids bed

For children aged 4–10, a standard single (90x190cm) will last well into secondary school age. For older children or those in smaller rooms, a mid-sleeper with a desk and storage underneath maximises floor space. For shared rooms, a standard bunk fits two children in the same floor area as a single bed. Triple bunks are available for three children. Before ordering any bunk or mid-sleeper, check your ceiling height — you need at least 70cm of clearance above the top sleeping surface for comfortable and safe use.
