Bookcase, wall shelf, or modular storage?

Freestanding bookcases are the default where you have floor space and want volume — they need no wall fixing beyond an anti-tip strap and can be moved when you rearrange. Wall shelves keep the floor clear and suit alcoves, narrow hallways and above-desk spaces; they need fixings appropriate to your wall type and are limited by what that wall will safely carry. Modular cube storage works where the contents vary — cubes take books, boxes, records or fabric bins equally well, and units can stand vertically or horizontally to fit the space.

Choosing a height

Low units up to roughly 90cm double as a room divider or a surface for lamps and plants, and keep sightlines open. Mid-height units around 120–130cm sit comfortably below a window line. Tall units of 160cm and above give the most storage per square metre of floor, and are the right answer in a small room where the only available space is vertical. Anything tall should be secured to the wall with an anti-tip fixing, particularly in a household with children.

Loading and assembly

Books are heavier than most people expect — a full metre of shelf can carry 20–30kg. Distribute weight evenly and keep the heaviest items on lower shelves. Units are delivered flat-packed with instructions and fixings; most assemble in 30–60 minutes, and taller carcasses are easier with two people. All dimensions are listed in centimetres on each product page.
